no photos
Name in Japanese: Echigo-Komagatake (越後駒ヶ岳)
Location: Niigata
Elevation: 2,003 m
1/25000 map: Okutadamiko (奥只見湖), Hakkaisan (八海山), Oyu (大湯)
Season for hikers: early June to October

A large mountain in a heavy snowfall area

Mt. Ecchigo-Komagatake is also called as Echigo-sanzan (three mountains) together with Mt. Hakkai and Mt. Nakanodake. It has been a place of mountain worship. Proper time for hiking is limited due to a large amount of remaining snow. It is one of the tough mountains for hikers in spite of its elevation (around 2,000 m) because of longer approach to the trailhead and dramatic changes in elevation.

Sample hiking route

Distance (round trip): 14.4 km
Distance in elevation: 938 m
Difficulty during the best season: intermediate level
Trailhead: Shiori-toge

Route and estimated course time:
Shiori-toge -(0:30)- Myojin-toge -(2:00)- Mt. Ogura -(2:50)- Mt. Echigo-Komagatake -(1:50)- Mt. Ogura -(2:30)- Komanoyu-sanso [9:40 in total]

Note: From Shiori-toge to Mt. Ogura is a gentle up and down route. It passes a nush area and nice view is expected in sunny days. On the other hand, caution for heat illness required. From Mt. Ogura to the peak, the route becomes steeper and there are rocky area and snow patch(es) occasionally even in summer.

  • Hello!

I noticed the beauty of Japanese nature when I went to an English language school in the US. While staying the US, I enjoyed hiking at National Parks. I wanted visitors from different countries to have a good time here in Japan as I did in the US.
