The peak, highhest in Hokkaido, rose in vast plateau

Mt. Taisetsu is comprehensive name for 4 mountain ranges with elevation of around 2,000 m (North-Taisetsu, Front-Taisetsu, East-Taisetsu and Tokachi mountains) in Taisetsu-zan National Park. Referring Mt. Taisetsu usually means North Taisetsu. Taisetsu-zan National Park still remains premitive figure and is the largest mountain national park in Japan.

Mt. Taisetsu is one of 47 active volcanoes covered by an “eruption alert” system that was started 04Aug2015. If you plan to hike Mt. Taisetsu, you should check the latest information on Volcanic Warnings (Japan Meteorological Agency).

Distance in elevation: 690 m
Difficulty during the best season: beginner ~ intermediate level
Trailhead: Asahidake Station (Ropeway station)

Route and estimated course time:
Asahidake Station -(Ropeway)- Sugatami Station -(2:20)- Mt. Asahi (Asahidake) -(1:20)- Sugatami -(Ropeway)- Asahidake Station [3:40 in total]

Note: Just a round-trip between Sugatami Station and Mt. Asahidake is a short and easy hike. So, Hiking to Sounkyo Onsen or Ginsendai is highly recommended for hikers who wish to enjoy rich nature of Mt. Taisetsu.
