Mt. Meakan – the highest peak with the fierce look figured active volcano

Mt. Akan is consist of 2 constastive mountains namely Oakan (‘Male’ Akan) and Meakan (‘Female’ Akan). Meakan, the highest peak of Mt. Akan, is an active volcano and still raises smoke which often leads a restriction to enter the mountain. Akan is a nature rich national park consisted of volcano, forest and lake, and many plants and animals including brown bears are inhabited. The national monument ‘Marimo’ is inhabited in Lake Akan.

Mt. Meakan is one of 47 active volcanoes covered by an “eruption alert” system that was started 04Aug2015. If you plan to hike Mt. Meakan (Mt. Akan), you should check the latest information on Volcanic Warnings (Japan Meteorological Agency).

Trailhead: Meakan Onsen

Route and estimated course time:
Meakan Onsen -(1:00)- 4th Station -(1:00)- Mt. Meakan -(0:20)- 8th Station -(1:10)- Onneto camping ground [3:30 in total]

Note: The route to the peak is rather easy even for beginners. A caution is necessary for volcanic gas beucaise it is an active volcano. The shape of volcano is very intense and is certainly worth seeing.
